STUDENT CASE STUDY

From Burger King and Uber deliveries to a $77K OTE sales offer: Karan’s story

In short

Karan worked his way from cook to manager at a Burger King restaurant, lost that job and drove Uber deliveries full time with no other offers coming in. After months of hearing nothing back, he started emailing companies directly. A company that had rejected him a month and a half earlier came back, and he received a Business Development Representative offer at $77K OTE.

The interview

Where Karan started

Karan has been in Canada since 2019. He started at a Burger King restaurant as a cook, and it took him about three years to be promoted to manager. He stayed for about four and a half years and saw no room to grow.

A move to another province did not work out. Back in British Columbia he lost the Burger King job, and with no other offers coming in he drove Uber deliveries full time. In his words, he was only surviving.

What changed

He joined the coaching in September after seeing someone close to him land a job through it. He is open about what happened next: for three to four months he was demotivated and inactive. He was following the methods, reaching out on LinkedIn, and getting very few responses.

The turn came with email outreach. Once he started writing to companies directly, replies came in and people were interested. He had gone into a couple of interviews earlier lacking confidence, and says reading the Interview Ninja book helped him a lot with this job.

The company that hired him had rejected him a month and a half before. It reached out again, held a short briefing call and a Zoom interview, and the next morning emailed asking him to come to the office that day. There he was interviewed again, which he had not expected. His interviewers told him his emails had a personal touch.

Where the coaching came in

Karan says weeks one and three of the coaching helped him most. He also admits he showed up to the live calls only once or twice, and believes that if he had been more attentive he could have got here far sooner.

This is the first time that someone is texting me congratulation, we are proud of you.

The result

Karan received a Business Development Representative offer at $77K OTE. He says he had expected around $50K, because his experience was flipping burgers and driving Uber.

He reports the same result in his own post in the Immigrant Ninja community: a Business Development Representative role at 77K OTE.
