Namrata was not short of chances. Through her college she got a research analyst job, then internships at two companies, and interviews with a lot of good companies came her way.
What she could not do was crack the interviews run by senior people from top companies. It left her frustrated and low: the opportunities were coming, just not at the level she expected, and she needed to find out what she was missing. During her final internship she decided to join a coaching program.
What changed
Her favourite part of the coaching was the mock interviews. Her first one did not go well, and she calls it a life-changing moment. She took it positively, because it showed her exactly where she was lagging.
Her lesson for others: even if you can speak English, you have to articulate yourself so well that the interviewer decides you are the one. For her that meant practising the common interview questions again and again.
She also kept building projects. She has 17 to 18 of them, and says they are why the interview calls came.
Where the coaching came in
Her coach says Namrata’s preparation on that first call was not up to standard, and told her so bluntly. She took the feedback the right way and worked on it.
The result
Namrata landed a Research Data and Ethics Board Coordinator job at Conestoga College, reported at $60K, with an increase expected after her probation period. The college’s reference check came through a day before the offer letter.
Her one regret is not doing more mock interviews. She believes she could have negotiated a better package.
