This is for you if you don’t have time to apply to jobs

The secret of getting ahead is getting started.
— Mark Twain

This is for you if you want to get out of your minimum-wage job but don’t find the time to apply to your field job because:

  • You are working two part-time jobs OR

  • You have overnight shifts and that messes up your routine OR

  • You simply don’t find the motivation, so you procrastinate

Since you loved the example of Bunty and Harpreet in one of the previous newsletters, I’m going to use them again!

You are working two part-time jobs

Bunty: “I’ve no time to apply as I get so tired once I come back from work.”

Harpeet: “This is a short-term sacrifice that I have to make for my future self. I will wake up 2 hours early and apply before going to my job.”

You have overnight shifts and that messes up your routine

Bunty: “I feel sleepy throughout the day and when I finally get fresh, it’s time to go back to work.”

Harpeet: “I will go straight to bed after coming from work. In the evening, I have 5 free hours and will utilize 3 of those on job-hunt.”

You simply don’t find the motivation, so you procrastinate

Bunty: “Yaar, aaj nhi apply karne ka man kar rha, kal karunga.”

Harpeet: “I have 0 motivation but let me just open my laptop and just apply to 1 job.”

If you are thinking like Bunty but want to become like Harpeet, here are 5 productivity tips for you:

1. Reduce Friction: Cancel your Netflix subscription. Use an app to time block your IG, YT, TikTok when it’s your job hunt time.

When you feel like procrastinating, tell yourself that you will just open your laptop and apply to 1 job. That will kick in the momentum and since you are already applying, you will apply to a few more!

2. Batch Tasks: Switching between different tasks consume energy. So, allocate specific days for specific tasks:
Sun, Tues, Fri can be for upskilling.
Mon, Wed, Thurs can be for applying.
Saturday could be for meal prep and hanging out with friends.

3. Use idle time: If your commute time is > 30 minutes, that’s a great opportunity for you to use that time to cold outreach, watch a YT/LinkedIn Learning video to upskill or even doze off so that you reach home fresh.

4. Have an Accountability Partner: When you do things in a group or atleast have 1 other person, you stay accountable as it induces a healthy competition and you feel that you are not alone in this journey.

At the end of the day, exchange info on both the positive aspects like the #applications & time devoted to upskilling and negative things like screen time spent on doomless scrolling.

5. Remember your Why: When you feel like slacking off, think about why you want to get your field job. Think about it as…

A ticket to get out of your existing situation.
An opportunity to retire your parents.
A stepping stone to fulfill all your dreams in life.

Keep Blooming,
Bani Singh
