The difference between a winner and a loser - a true 🇨🇦 story
You’re in for an interesting and powerful read…
Harpeet and Bunty both came to Canada in 2022.
Both of them had no work experience and a non-existent skillset when they landed in Canada.
A few weeks later, they both got a part-time job at minimum wage.
They both had a loan to pay-off and dreams to chase.
Fast forward to 2024, they are living completely different lives!
Harpeet in 2024:
He’s working his dream corporate job and is making $85,000 as a fresher.
He’s in a happy loving relationship and no longer feels lonely in Canada.
He’s inviting his parents to Canada and will give them their dream vacation!
Bunty in 2024:
He dreads waking up every morning as he has to go for his 8-hour low-paying and boring Security shift.
He feels lonely as he doesn’t have a good friend circle or a gf.
He’s stressed about having no savings and feels sad that he can’t give back to his parents.
They both started from the same position but their present looks so much different. What happened? Let’s dig in…
Skillset
Bunty: He thought that he has spent 30 lakhs to come to Canada and pursue this course, so he would get a job solely based on that.
Harpeet: Harpeet soon understood that his college education is not going to get him a job. So he took a consultation session from an established immigrant on the career he should choose considering his limited skillset. He got clarity and started upskilling himself while still in college.
Friend Circle
Bunty: He had friends who said dialogues like:
- “There are no jobs in Canada”
- “We came at the wrong time”
- “We should have stayed in India”
They didn’t believe that they could get a corporate job and had accepted working minimum-jobs as their new reality.
Harpeet: He also had friends like this but then thought:
- When I talk to people in India, they say “there are no jobs in India.”
- When I talk to people in Halifax, they say “all the jobs are in Toronto.”
- When I talk to people in Toronto, they say “there are no jobs here.”
But he used his critical thinking and thought that people are still getting jobs. So, he changed his friend circle from a group of naysayers to those who were already in corporate jobs or who had a positive mindset.
Mindset
Bunty: He blamed everything on the Canadian job market and never took accountability. He kept thinking “There are no jobs here” and never thought “I don’t have any skills. Would I even hire myself if I were the HR looking at my resume?”
Harpeet: He switched his part-time job to hone his communication skills. He kept a positive mindset and focused on becoming the best version of himself. When he felt stuck, he took external help and invested in himself.
The best part of the story is that you can choose whether you want to be Bunty or Harpeet.
And as long as you are alive, it’s never too late to adopt a new mindset and change your life.
P.S. This is a true story of our mentee Harpreet Singh Jaggi! You would have seen his success story in one of the earlier newsletters - he’s making $85K at the age of 20!
Remember wishing for the life of Harpeet, while thinking and doing things like Bunty is impossible.
I hope you get the courage to prioritize long-term gratification over short-term comfort.
Keep Blooming,
Bani Singh
