A common mistake people make in their job hunt process
I have a funny story to share!
Back in my college days, I got a sprain in my left ankle.
It wasn’t that serious so I just tied a crepe bandage around it.
Fast forward to 1-2 days…
I was blissfully taking an afternoon nap in my hostel room.
My nap was interrupted by the loud ringing of my phone.
I picked up the call. It was my friend asking me to come down as our group was going out for snacks.
He added that they were already sitting downstairs in the garden and were just waiting for me.
I saw that my bandage had unraveled in my sleep.
So, I quickly tied it and headed downstairs.
Suddenly, one of my friends said, “Bani, tera sprain left ankle mein nhi tha kya?”
I said, “Haan, left mein hi hai”.
Just as the words left my mouth, I realized that I had accidentally tied the bandage on my right ankle!
My reaction was a mixture of these two emojis: 🤦🏽♀️ + 😂
Needless to say, we had a good laugh that day!
This brings me to today’s lesson:
If your left ankle hurts, applying a bandage to the right ankle won’t help!
Obvious, right?
But you might be making this mistake in your job search!
For example…
If you’re not getting interview calls,
The issue is your lack of skillset or resume or your application strategy.
If you’re not clearing the initial interview rounds,
The issue is your lack of communication skills or the ability to sell yourself.
If you’re not clearing the behavioural round,
The issue is your lack of preparation of situation-based questions.
So, if you’ve given 3+ interviews but haven’t cleared those,
then fixing your resume or applying to more jobs is not the solution.
The problem is your interview skill.
So, the solution should also be oriented towards that!
Even if you get more interviews, it would do you no good if you didn’t devote time to get better at it.
If you improved your resume instead, that won’t help!
You will still give the same non-coherent answers.
The blockage in your job-hunt process was not the resume.
But the interview skills which you didn’t improve.
So, don’t waste your time fixing something which is not even a problem!
Work on the actual problem!
Keep Blooming,
